Direct Hire - Case Study
Thinking back to the old school days, I just remember it being a good laugh. Until, the days came when we actually had to start thinking. And the thinking for me was the difficult part. I could go to the lessons, and I was fine with exams, but when it came to my future, I had absolutely no idea.
I decided to pick some universities on UCAS. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for. I just knew I liked Business, and it was something I was good at. But I didn’t really want to move away from home, and debt scared me more than my Mum on a bad day. A job, I thought to myself. I could work. But I wanted a degree. I wanted to keep learning. I wanted to say I got a 1st in Business.
On the advice of my teacher I applied through the Brokerage for a position with Commerzbank on their trainee programme. On this scheme Commerzbank pay full time wages as well as paying trainees course fees to study at the European College of Business Management so seemed to solve all my problems.
I had never heard of these “Brokerage” people, but I attended a CV workshop with them where I found out 72 people had also applied for the job. It was so helpful to know what was good and bad for a CV and interview, and I was beginning to get confident, but also feel the pressure from the number of other candidates.
I rearranged my CV and sent it back to the Brokerage. It was an agonising wait but when the news came I had got through to the interviews I was ecstatic. Absolutely thrilled. And once they were over, and the news came that I got through to the final stage, I was even happier. I knew the scheme was for me, and it was just a matter of telling the interviewers they wanted me.
To make this a happy story, I did get the job. And I am sitting here now at my desk in Commerzbank, hoping to inspire more people to use the facilities, resources and the general good will of The Brokerage to help you find your future. The Brokerage is a key part in integrating young people to the City and beyond. They provide courses, workshops and give guidance on careers within the business and finance sectors
