Students from the ages of 14-19 arrived in our offices, bright eyed and bushy tailed, eagerly awaiting an inside peek into some of the biggest successful businesses in the City such as UBS, Swiss Re, Capco and CMS Cameron Mckenna. The interactive two day workshops are always popular and are accessible through local councils and via Futureversity, with age not acting as a barrier to understanding working life.
"We loved meeting the volunteers from the companies - they were really down to earth and gave us loads of tips" - Camden Summer University
The array of different industries that the students were exposed to opened their eyes to life in the City and the many different career options. One of our students was inspired to study Maths at university after talking to an Actuarial professional during our visit to Swiss Re and learning that insurance was a massive industry in the City, while others decided to set their sights to law and other financial careers. All the students were able to talk to and interview City workers in their offices, discuss what their jobs were like and receive individual feedback and coaching on their own skills.
"We liked going to different companies" - Enfield Summer University
As part of our two day workshop we offered students a chance to see two different businesses, exposing them to a diverse range of City careers and exploring London from street level to 39 floors high at the top floor of the famous 'Gherkin'. In a packed and exciting two days from our offices at the Brokerage to the boardrooms of UBS our students were learning about entry routes in to the city, gaining information on qualifications they might need and getting advice on how to succeed at interviews - invaluable tips!
The volunteers from each company were honest and open about their own experiences and gave the students priceless feedback about their own interview techniques and ways to sell themselves and stand out from the crowd.
"We really enjoyed the Brokerage Trading Game - it's a great idea" - Tower Hamlets Summer University
Each workshop culminated with our popular 'Trading Game' where students competed against each other in teams to see who could make the most profit through buying and selling shares. We saw highs and lows in the market and high pressured team discussions - but in the end everyone went away having learnt a great deal about their own skills.
