We’ve recently been talking to the AMOS Bursary about potential collaborations, and this month we were delighted to host our first joint event for their students.
The AMOS Bursary work with academically able British young men of African and Caribbean descent on an intensive four year personal and professional development programme. It is a holistic programme aimed to develop softer skills essential for the workplace and supports the boys through key academic years. Over the years there has been a lot of crossover in the students we’ve worked with, many of our Alumni also participated in the AMOS Bursary scheme and so it seemed a great idea to team up properly.
23 of their students visited the Brokerage office, where we organised an in-depth CV surgery. After a quick introduction to some CV fundamentals, the students spent over an hour speaking one-to-one with Brokerage staff and volunteers about CV feedback and general career advice. 20 Brokerage Alumni volunteered for the session, giving their unique insights and perspectives.
Here’s some of the quotes and pictures from the evening. Look out for further news on this collaboration very soon!
"The experience was excellent. The chance to meet professionals and graduates both newly qualified and vastly experienced; the amount of advice I was able to gain regarding employability, skills necessary for particular fields as well as a lot of help fixing up my CV was remarkable."
"Having that one-to-one discussion with an individual who has been through the same education system, has now entered the world of work and is now comfortable provides that sense of security that you just can't find in most organisations and people. They know what employers are looking for! The CV Surgery has allowed me to think with more openly about future prospects as well as kick-starting a trail of action plans in order to get there."
"The CV surgery at The Brokerage Citylink was incredibly insightful and the advice given was invaluable. They've helped me to understand the components that make up a good CV and also how to get the best out of what I'm putting into my CV. Many thanks to all the volunteers at The Brokerage for their time and effort."
"I came in with a set of notes and left with the structure for a brilliant CV... there's no question that these were leading professionals showing what their firms look for to recruit."
"The CV Surgery was very beneficial for me because it allowed me to get an insight into what employers look for in a CV. I received useful feedback and tips on how to shorten my CV so that my most relevant attributes and work experiences were standing out and it also increased my confidence in writing cover letters."
"I found the CV surgery at the Brokerage highly engaging and informational. My mentors were able to point out where omissions should be made and, equally, where important pieces of information should be added regarding my past work experiences and extra-curricular activities. In our short session, I learnt much about the various nuances and skills which go into writing a good CV, which I found invaluable. Overall, my experience was encouraging and I hope to draw more on the expertise learnt from the Brokerage in the future."
"The staff at the Brokerage were phenomenal hosts that provided a great atmosphere throughout the night. The alumni of Brokerage provided me with different sets of information that tuned in to key areas of what it takes to make a great CV. Each focused on a specific aspect from appropriate details to page layout and structure and I feel that I am now better equipped to make my CV. Every staff member and alumni that I encountered was very welcoming and willing to help in any way possible."
