I chose to complete my work experience with The Brokerage because it allowed me to venture into all different career paths that I have considered. Its charitable work with companies in the city as well as its work with young students was what had initially drew me to it.
After having spent a week at The Brokerage, I feel as though I have learnt a great deal about the City and have discovered that it is an environment in which I would love to work in in the foreseeable future. Not only was The Brokerage team an absolute pleasure to work with but they were also extremely helpful in introducing me to working life.
A week of workshops and – not very often – office work, I was hooked! I could not wait to come into the office every morning and be met with all the wonderful things that I would be able to do for the day. On the first day, I had the opportunity to partake in a workshop presented by Rosa (the Programme Manager) at an actuary firm in the city named ‘Barnett Waddingham’. Before attending this workshop, I hadn’t known that places such as an actuary existed or that there were jobs surrounding this! However, it was very interesting to me that there were employees at Barnett Waddingham who too, had not discovered the job until they researched it.
The second day at The Brokerage was again spent observing a workshop which was hosted at Nomura – an international investment bank. As this was something I was interested in gaining knowledge on, I was ecstatic when I had the chance to ‘interview’ the employees at Nomura on themselves and their careers. This interview was useful in giving me first-hand advice on what to study at both University and Sixth Form level as well as giving me an insight as to the many jobs that were available inside not just one company, but the city. The facilities that Nomura had to offer to employees and showcase to us also conveyed to me the benefits that come with the job. I found that being able to carry myself in a professional manner has improved my communication and people skills enormously as well as my confidence, which has been developed through presenting myself to younger students.
For the remainder of the week, I was able to work on my I.T. Skills as I worked with various computer programmes such as Excel and Google Drive in imputing data for The Brokerage team. As a student who has personally partaken in workshops presented to me, it was interesting to see what happened and where the feedback that we were frequently asked to give went.
I was incredibly pleased with my placement – even returning for a second week in order to gain even more knowledge! During this week, I partook in more workshops including one that was hosted at Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP – a law firm in the City). Being able to explore both of the careers that I have had a long-standing interest in for many years was outstanding and something that I believe no other work placement could offer to me. The Brokerage has been responsible for influencing my future choices – hopefully in either Banking or Law!
I have been incredibly lucky to have secured a placement at The Brokerage and am hopeful that they will consider me again in the future.
