The Brokerage - Raising Aspirations; Creating Diversity

Volunteering Opportunities - Case Study

T: 020 7628 9904

The Brokerage's Working in the City forms an important part of our Community Programme at Allen & Overy.  The informative, fun and interactive workshops are well prepared  which makes organisation and planning simple on our part. Around 100 volunteers, from a broad cross-section of our staff, have taken part in the workshops since our involvement started in 2004.

"It was a real pleasure to speak to such an enthusiastic and engaged group of students.  It was clear that the Brokerage are performing a very valuable role in broadening these children's horizons." Caroline Fletcher  - Executive to Managing Partner.

Students participating in the programme have been lively and enthusiastic, challenging our volunteers with some insightful and probing questions. Staff thoroughly enjoy participating as it gives them a chance to share their own real experiences on their path to a successful career.  The scheme is extremely popular as staff from all areas of the firm are invited to volunteer from senior partners, to IT specialists, to PAs, to staff who work in the print room.  This variety of expertise also benefits the students as they are able to gain knowledge of all roles within the firm.

“The experience of talking to the students was much more satisfying than I expected. Being able to communicate to them what we do, and to see the recognition in them that a whole world of possibilities is within their grasp was very gratifying. It is elating to be able to show the students what they can accomplish with some determination and a little hard work!”

Ruben van Schalkwyk, Security Manager

“After a short introduction the students asked a barrage of questions, some of which were more insightful than those I am asked in Graduate Recruitment interviews”!

Richard Browne, Partner, Allen & Overy
