What was your first meeting with your mentor like?
We met at State Street and got a coffee together. I explained my interests and my mentor described her current position. She was very friendly and easy to talk to, and we were both excited to begin the programme together.

What has surprised you most about the experience of being mentored?

How my mentor really went out of her way to help me. In the run up to the business challenge, she arranged several meetings to help me prep, and remained in close contact via e-mail. She also helped me work out which area of finance to focus on by arranging for me to meet professionals from across the business. I met a relationship manager, a portfolio manager and even had a mock interview conducted by my mentor and a colleague. I was amazed by how generous everyone was with their time.

Has being part of the mentoring programme led to any further opportunities?
The graduation event for the programme was a great chance to network and I got talking to two managing directors and one graduate recruiter from Citi. From there, I decided to apply for a summer role as an analyst, which I got. This networking opportunity, together with everything else I learnt on the programme, has definitely helped my career path.

  • Thank you Tom for all the hard work you have put into this, it has made a significant difference to our students, especially some of our lower ability kids who have unfortunate life problems. It truly is an inspiration to work alongside The Brokerage.
