Insight days
According to the government’s 2018 State of the Nation report, disadvantaged students are STILL less likely to be able to access good careers advice and STILL more likely to be leaving education at age 18. Could this be the most crucial age for providing high quality advice and guidance to shape students’ future careers?
For young people without this necessary guidance and support, it can be difficult to know where to start when thinking about their future careers.
With their misconceptions of the professional world and ideas that people from certain backgrounds don’t belong in the big, shiny London buildings, it’s important that steps are taken to ensure the next generation recognise the variety of options available to them.
Insight days are a great opportunity for young people to discover careers in a particular company and sector. By meeting the people inside the business and learning about a specific company, they can leave feeling motivated and excited to pave a career like the people they’ve just met.
For two years we’ve worked in partnership with Mazars to provide an inspiring insight event which delves into the world of accountancy. Through the Careers That Count insight day, we’ve showcased the world of accounting to students in Year 12, a sector they may not have otherwise explored.
Unaware of the companies and roles found within the sector, our young people were able to discover the various career options available in this area. Employees from across the company were on hand to help paint a picture of working life in the company through a variety of activities, including office tours, interviews and networking.
Insight days not only introduce young people to the professional world, but also introduce businesses to local, talented individuals who they might not have reached through their standard methods of recruitment.
“The insight days at Mazars enabled me to learn about presenting myself in the world of work.”
Speaking of their involvement, Anthony Carey, Partner, Chair of Mazars Social mobility Group, said:
“We very much value our partnership with The Brokerage in arranging Careers that Count days which aim to provide an insight into accountancy and working in a professional services firm as well as contributing to employability skills. We are deeply committed to widening participation in the recruitment and development of team members as part of our Mazars for Good approach.”
It’s thanks to partnerships with companies like Mazars that we are able to provide these opportunities for our candidates, helping them to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to plan their future.
