The Brokerage Connection: City of London Business Traineeship with Lloyd’s, 2010

What was your first day like?
My placement was with Lloyd’s of London.Walking into the office was extremely nerve-wracking. I had just turned 18 and I had no clue what to expect. But the team were really lovely and welcomed me in. I quickly realised that I could fit in there – it didn’t matter that I wasn’t the same age as them, or that I didn’t have the same experiences as they did.

What did you do on your placement?
One of my projects was to run a community event called The London Neighbourhood Games for primary school children at Mile End Stadium. There were activities like football and tennis, with employees from Lloyds keeping the score. The employees from Lloyds were keen to give something back and the children got so much out of it.

Did you have the opportunity to explore any other areas of the business?
Yes, this was something that I was keen to do and the team were great about helping to set that up. I had studied economics for A-level and was interested in finance, so I spent some time with the financial accounting team and helped to run some reports. I also worked with the marketing and events team, helping them to host an annual dinner attended by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

  • The team at The Brokerage have put together a very well thought out programme. They have even asked students to trial their content and have taken our thoughts into their consideration. All the modules will be really helpful to me because they target exactly what I am not sure about such as how to write a good CV and cover letter, and how to use LinkedIn most effectively. I think this has been a very beneficial opportunity to me; I can’t wait to start the programme!
