Still Starting the Smart way with Allen & Overy
24 Jan 13

This summer will see the fifth Allen & Overy Smart Start Experience - it seems like only yesterday we were at the start of the very first Experience back in 2009. We’re currently well underway with recruitment for this summer, and can’t wait to be back with the participants at Bishops Square for the week in July!

Each year, over 100 sixth formers spend a whole week at one of the world’s biggest law firms, taking part in a variety of challenging and interactive activities that push their enterprise skills to the limit.

The Allen & Overy Smart Start Experience

Drawn from our partner schools, the participants gain a real insight into the world of business and law, and are encouraged to develop their own workplace skills and start building their professional networks.

Smart Start participantsThe Experience has been a big inspiration for the PRIME initiative among law firms, and each year Allen & Overy have had a number of their clients and partners getting involved during the week.

It is certainly a huge commitment, but one the firm feels is more than worth it. David Morley, Senior Partner at A&O, says that "we're trying to create a more level playing field so that young people from all backgrounds have a chance to get a foot into business. The Smart Start Experience provides the opportunity for young people to do just that."

In all it has been a huge success, and it’s certainly been exciting for us to be a part of.

Connor Cassidy
Connor Cassidy was member of the 2009 Smart Start winners and 2010 CBT Trainee of the Year

The Smart Starters themselves have gone on to have notable success! Connor Cassidy was a member of the very first winning Smart Start team in 2009, and went on to be named Trainee of the Year for the 2010 City of London Business Traineeship (CBT) programme.

One student from the 2010 Smart Start cohort has successfully gained a training contract with Allen & Overy, and is no doubt the first of many.

And no less than 6 participants from the 2011 programme went on to secure CBT placements last summer. We’re already seeing more signing up for internship opportunities this year.
