Hello Hackney: New Pathways to the City Programme off to a flying start
29 Jan 13

Autumn 2012 saw the birth of the Pathways to the City Programme, an initiative funded by UBS which seeks to tackle the issue of social mobility and raise the aspirations of young students in the borough of Hackney.

Read about our progress over the past few months…

The Brokerage has built closer partnerships with schools in the borough of Hackney to provide them with a bespoke and tailor made programme of access to the City. This has allowed young people the chance to visit, experience and (come June) work the City life. With workshops and days out into the City or outreach support within schools we have met over 450 students from Hackney already.

Through their well-established relationship with the Brokerage and support for the Pathways programme, UBS is able to build on their long term commitment to aid the economic and social regeneration of Hackney. The contribution of UBS and its employees over the past 25 years was recently recognised with the Lord Mayor’s 25th Anniversary Award at the 2012 Dragon Awards - click here for details.

Petchey Academy students networking at Société Générale

Throughout the last term we worked on developing application and interview techniques with Hackney Community College, facilitated a drop down day at Mossbourne Academy and met some of Petchey Academy’s finest from their University Gateway stream. Bridge Academy students got up close with window cleaners in some of London’s tallest buildings whilst scaling the heights at the top floor of the Broadgate Tower, and all of our selected six participating schools are due to visit a number of different City firms over the coming months.

This summer thanks to the Pathways programme we will see the first work experience placementsfor Hackney students hosted by the Brokerage and other corporate partners in the Square Mile. Year 12 students from Hackney will have an opportunity to partake in real project work, meet a variety of different City businesses and get to step inside some of London’s most iconic landmarks.
