The Big Give Christmas Challenge

We haven’t really taken part in a fundraising drive like this before, so we weren’t sure what to expect – but we were absolutely blown away by the response, with almost £5,000 raised over the three days. Thank you so much for everyone that donated, or hassled friends, families, colleagues and bosses to pitch in!

All the donations we’ve received will be contributing to our Outreach programme. This provision is invaluable for schools, as it allows us to visit schools for free to deliver careers workshops, employability sessions and more. From trekking all over London to deliver early morning assemblies on City careers, to running the Trading Game 8 times a day for an enterprise drop down day, Outreach really is some of the most valuable, impactful work we do, if not the most glamorous. So thank you!

Essay Winners honoured at ING

Our partnership with The Worshipful Company of International Bankers has really prospered over the years, and we really couldn’t believe that this year’s Essay Competition is the SEVENTH that we’ve help them run!

This year was one of the most successful yet, with over 100 entries from 15 schools - despite one of the most challenging essay topics so far: “Does the UK as a whole benefit from London’s pre-eminence in financial services?”

The winners were announced at an evening event this Monday at ING. Gerald Walker, CEO for ING in the UK, Ireland and the Middle East, provided an inspiring and motivational speech for the event – drawing on his own journey from a Scottish comprehensive school to the top of one of the City’s biggest names.

The winners and runner of each school were announced, winning £100 and £50 respectively (as well as a much appreciated £100 for their school), before the really exciting bit.

There was a dramatic aplenty as it was announced that not only would the overall winners and runners up receive a cash prize but they’d also be offered a weeks’ work experience at Willis – one of the biggest insurance brokers in the City! It’s the first time work experience has been offered as a prize for the competition.

Congratulations to the winners and we hope you enjoy your week at Willis!

Teaming up with Berwin Leighton Paisner to provide a Pathway into Law

The legal sector is notorious as one of the hardest to get into, with competition high and opportunities limited. So we were delighted when one of the best known names in the City, Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), told us they were interested in working together to get our talented candidates onto their summer vacation scheme and, hopefully, future training contracts.

We were excited to announce this week that BLP are providing us with up to six places on their summer vacation scheme. Applications are open now for Brokerage candidates.

Last Tuesday, the partnership really kicked off with an “Insight into Law” Open Evening at BLP for Brokerage candidates. Thirty-five undergraduates and graduates attended, and they were able to hear more about BLP and the opportunities available in law. The group met Partners, Trainees and the BLP recruitment team. It was a fantastic evening, with tons of valuable advice, a very entertaining and loud networking session and some amazing canapés!

Recruitment Team visits round up

Six school visits this week as part of our candidate recruitment drive for 2015. We visited Sacred Heart RC School, St Michael’s Catholic College and Kingsdale Foundation School, all in Southwark; Tower Hamlets College and St Paul’s Way Trust School, also in Tower Hamlets; and Lambeth Academy.

We were joined by some brilliant Brokerage Alumni who were able to give their personal experiences and advice. Josh, a former CBT intern at Beazley and ING (not to mention 2013 Highly Commended Trainee of the Year), joined us at Sacred Heart. Current Commerzbank Vocational Trainees Christy and Georgina joined us at St Michael’s for a special “Alternatives to University” presentation. And finally Khadija and Karolina, fresh off CBT internships at ING and Michael Page respectively, gave their insights at Tower Hamlets College. Thanks for your help!

This week’s recruitment highlights

The Recruitment Team had a sudden influx of opportunities from Beazley this week. For our first and second year undergraduates there was an excellent internship opportunity – and unusually it was a part-time role. Meanwhile for college leavers and graduates they asked us to help them recruitment two permanent roles – a Service Support Analyst in IT, and an Underwriting Assistant role in M&A Transaction Liability (with a specifically legal twist).

The Team are progressing several other roles that have previously been advertised recently with Threadneedle Investments, Smith & Williamson and Chaucer.

Looking ahead to the 2015 intake for college leavers, both the Lloyd’s Apprenticeship scheme and the Commerzbank Vocational Trainee programme are both close to being finalised – look out for details being posted to candidates very soon.
