City law firm DWF and The Brokerage

“Brokerage Citylink is a charity which works with state schools in 7 boroughs around the City of London and provides students from the area with an opportunity to apply for internships with companies based in the City.

The Brokerage offers a Pathway of opportunities for talented young Londoners who are aiming towards a future career in business, finance, professional services or corporate law. Working with Citylink allows us to access an untapped and diverse talent pool of young people who are interested in a career in the law.

Graham Dickinson, Partner in our London office formed the relationship through the Worshipful Company of Insurers in 2005; since this time we have developed our programme and have built a strong relationship”.

Our support for the Brokerage takes many forms but the structured programme includes a student placement for 6 weeks in the summer; two additional students for one week each at Easter and Christmas and two training sessions to a number of students once a year. Recently the sessions have been on CV writing and interview skills and another for undergraduates who are looking for a career in law.

Innes and Rebecca Reynolds, Senior Solicitor in our Occupational Health department are keen supporters of the programme with Innes recently sitting on the panel at a Brokerage’s event with the City of London Corporation, which funds the City of London Business Traineeship Programme. At the event, Innes spoke about the technicalities of taking trainees and gave advice to prospective employers. The event was aimed at introducing the programme to new employers who are interested in taking part but have not previously hosted placements. Also on the panel were representatives from Societe General and Beazley.

Joining Innes was Stanley Kamalu, with Innes telling us “we were very proud to take Stanley along with us. He gave an account of his experience from a very personal perspective and how this had helped him with his career choice. Stanley is a great example of how working with the Brokerage has helped us to tap into the best talent and convert our work with this great charity into career opportunities”.

Stanley tells us about his introduction to DWF; “The Brokerage Citylink is an excellent organisation that allowed me to discover the innovative and growing DWF LLP in 2010/11. Following a visit from the Brokerage Citylink to my sixth form, Raines Foundation School, I gained a 12-week placement in 2010 at Allen & Overy LLP. At the end of the internship I attended a networking event, hosted by the Brokerage Citylink in association with the Worshipful Company of Insurers, and met Innes Ebert, Graham Dickinson and Rebecca Reynolds of DWF. As part of the evening the Partner, Graham Dickinson delivered a special address to the event where he discussed insurance law, which was a previously unknown area of law to me. This inspired me to learn more, so I subsequently interviewed for and secured a 2-week placement in April 2011 whilst studying law at University. This was my first positive exposure to insurance law, and motivated me to keep an open mind with my career. Currently I am employed by DWF in the Professional Indemnity & Commercial department, where I deal with a wide range of Construction matters.”

Innes confirms her commitment to the work the Brokerage does and comments “I strongly support the work the Brokerage does in engaging young people into the city and have found the process to be rewarding as have others who have worked with the students. They all make enthusiastic and valuable contributions during their time with us. I know that Rebecca feels the same way too!”.
