Sixth Annual Summer Networking Event by the Worshipful Company of Insurers & The Brokerage
14 Jul 15

The insurance profession’s sixth Annual Summer Networking Event on Tuesday 14th July, organised in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Insurers and the Brokerage, was as usual a huge success.

A tremendous turnout - nearly 200 people, split roughly between staff from the insurance sector and students - crowded into Insurance Hall, Aldermanbury, to meet, mingle, and learn more about the profession and the career opportunities available across the many areas of business.

Guest of Honour was Stephen P. McGill CBE, Group President of Aon plc, who gave an inspirational speech, directed both at the students in terms of working hard and aiming high, but also at the insurers themselves reminding them to consider London’s rich diversity in the high quality pool of available young talent in the room.

“Don’t underestimate a career in insurance”, he said, reflecting that many people do not seek out a career in the profession but find it offers them a wealth of opportunity – from underwriting, to broking, to risk, and to re-insurance - which enables them to spend a varied and fulfilling career in the sector.

Reminding the students that not all successful careers require a university degree, he outlined his own career journey, stressing that business acumen, hard work and being highly effective in the workplace were vital ingredients to any career, regardless of background or level of education.

Summing up what the students needed to do for themselves to achieve their own successful career, Stephen quoted Sir. Matt Busby: “Strive for perfection, and if you fail settle for excellence”.

Graham Dickinson, Master of the Worshipful Company of Insurers and a Partner of DWF LLP, a firm which has partnered with the Brokerage Citylink for a number of years, said, “This event is one of the highlights of the year for the Company. This one exceeded expectations.

“I was delighted to meet so many students and all at the Brokerage can be rightly proud of the achievements of the scheme. Some stars of the future were clearly on display.”

All the students who attended the event came away with a positive impression of a career in insurance, with 97% of respondents considering a career in the sector.

One student – whose comments were reflected across most of the feedback – said, “I just wanted to say thank you for opening my eyes to an industry I hadn’t considered before and aiding me in my self-discovery of what I want to do in the future. This event was actually invaluable for me.”

The Brokerage Citylink and the Worshipful Company of Insurers would like to thank ACE European Group and Louisa Lombardo, ACE Resourcing Business Partner, for their support in sponsoring the event, and without whom, this important event would not have been possible.
