The Next Gen Talent Network making real impact to Social Mobility Day

As we mark Social Mobility Day 2026, we're celebrating the journeys of talented young people who are proving that potential, not background, should determine career success. #StoriesMatter

Avni had no professional connections until she found The Brokerage

For Avni, a law student with ambitions of building a legal career, navigating the professional world wasn't always straightforward. With both parents working in manual occupations, she didn't have access to the professional networks or industry insight that many of her peers could draw upon.

Determined to build her future, Avni joined The Brokerage's Next Gen Talent Network to gain the skills, confidence and connections needed to pursue a career in law.

Profile Name: Avni No family connections with professional jobs

Joined The Next Gen Talent Network in March 2024

Interested in HR, Law and Marketing and Advertising

Graduated in 2026 with a degree in Law

What followed was a journey of growth, networking and opportunity.

Through employer events, professional connections and interview preparation support, Avni developed the confidence to put herself forward for opportunities that would help shape her future. One particularly impactful moment came when she attended an application and interview skills session delivered through The Brokerage, helping her prepare for a highly competitive legal internship interview.

The support paid off.

Avni successfully secured a placement year as a legal intern, gaining valuable experience and insight into the profession she hoped to join.

Following the completion of her placement year and university degree, Avni continued exploring opportunities to further her career. She was offered an internship through The Brokerage, but before the placement began, she received an offer she couldn't turn down: a permanent paralegal role with the organisation where she had completed her internship.

For us, that's exactly what social mobility looks like in action.

A talented young person accessing the opportunities, networks and confidence needed to secure meaningful employment and begin building a successful professional career.

Today, Avni is excited for her legal career to begin and encourages other young people to take advantage of every opportunity available to them, even those that may not seem directly related to their chosen industry.

Her story is a powerful reminder that when young people are given access to the right support, guidance and professional networks, incredible things can happen.

I would like to give a huge thank you to the Brokerage for your support. I have gained a significant amount of skills and knowledge from the events I have attended over the years, and the programme has no doubt played a significant role in helping me to achieve this career objective. - Avni

Q & A with Avni:

How you found The Brokerage and why you decided to sign up?

"I first heard about The Brokerage while taking a not-for-credit language course on top of my undergraduate law degree. I met a range of people from different courses, including a friend on a maths course. She told me about The Brokerage since she had signed up herself, and attended events related to financial careers. She let me know that the programme supported young people from underrepresented backgrounds looking to secure professional careers, including legal careers. Since my parents both have manual jobs, I didn't have as much knowledge about professional careers compared to many of my peers at university, and I was trying to secure a legal career. This was the main reason I decided to sign up to The Brokerage. I was also looking to increase my confidence attending networking events, since I knew that networking skills would be key to launching a successful legal career."

What has been your highlights?

"In my second year of university, I received an invitation to interview for a year in industry as a legal intern. I was really enthusiastic about the opportunity, but I knew that my interview skills needed some work. I signed up to an online application and interview session with Fitch, run by The Brokerage. This allowed me to complete a free mock interview and receive personalised feedback from someone working in a professional services role. This event particularly stood out to me since I felt much more confident going to the interview having completed the practice interview. I managed to secure the placement year, which I was really proud of. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I was offered a job as a paralegal by the organisation I completed the placement year with. The confidence I gained from attending events run by The Brokerage, particularly the mock interview event, definitely played a role in helping me to secure this opportunity."

What would you say to any future young people signing up?

"Attend as many events as you are able to, even if they don't initially seem directly related to the industry you are looking to break into. Although I was primarily targeting a legal career, I attended many events at organisations focused more on finance and insurance, but I was usually able to network with someone working on the in-house legal team at these organisations. Even where this wasn't the case, attending networking events dramatically increased my confidence and gave me some fantastic insight into careers in professional services."
