Maria – Managing General Agents Association intern

Case study: Maria Baez

Maris BaezHow did you first get introduced to The Brokerage?
In 2015 I gained a summer placement as part of the Lloyd’s Community Programme through The Brokerage. I was placed at insurance firm Beazley.

What did you do following your placement?
Around a year later I took part in a mentoring programme, again through the Lloyd’s Community Programme. It was great opportunity for me to explore the insurance sector further and also develop key employability skills to help me in the future.

What skills do you think you have developed as a result of the programmes?
The skills I gained from the experiences are truly invaluable. Notably, I would say professional communication skills, for example writing emails, and addressing people in meetings. This has made me feel a lot more at ease and confident in myself when working.”

What’s your proudest moment?
Definitely overcoming my fear of public speaking! With the help of my mentor, I actually went on to become a finalist in the mentoring programme’s presentation challenge.

What are you doing now?
I’m at university at the moment studying physics, but also interning at the Managing General Agents’ Association, which is a not-for-profit organisation focused on shaping the future of delegated underwriting in the UK.  When I’ve finished my studies I hope to continue my career in insurance and become an actuary.

  • I saw a clear improvement in myself from the introduction to graduation of the mentoring programme as I was able to relax more and begin to enjoy networking.
